Investigation: Hotel Aiken

Area of Location:  Aiken, SC


Site History: Hotel Aiken was built in 1898 by Henry Hahn and is located on the corner of Richland Avenue and Laurens Street in Aiken, South Carolina.  In 1929, it was bought, remodeled, and enlarged to include 50 bedrooms with private baths by Leonard R. Holley (Holley Hotel), and was owned and operated by the Holley family for 50 years.  Hotel Aiken has the oldest operating elevator in South Carolina and is currently owned and operated by Shah Investments, LLC.


Special Notes:  Hotel Aiken is a beautiful, historic, 4-star hotel with affordable rates.  The staff is welcoming, friendly, and gracious.  South Coast Paranormal Society recommends this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

Eyewitness Reports of Paranormal Phenomena:  Legend has it that some of the rooms in Hotel Aiken are haunted.  Room 302 is said to be haunted by a despondent guest who jumped to his death from the corner window.  A guest reported seeing the ghost of a small, elderly woman in Room 320, and servants are said to haunt Room 328 (which is the old servants’ quarters).  Many unexplained noises have been heard and shadows have been seen throughout the hotel.  Housekeepers report hearing whispers when the floor is empty.  Housekeepers’ carts move to the other end of the hallway.  Guests report hearing a woman crying, sometimes screaming on occasion.  Doors open and close by themselves and toilets flush in unoccupied rooms.


Investigators Present: Rachelle Moran, Josh Wilmoth, Paul Eagleston, and Shanna Moran.


Equipment Used:  K2 meter, TriField meter, TriField Natural EM meter, Lutron EMF-822A, Sony HandyCams, digital voice recorders, flashlights, digital cameras, PX/Ovilus.


Phenomena Experienced:   EMF readings were all in the normal range on initial sweep.  Unexplained noises were heard in the areas of the attic and cellar and a shadow was reported by one team of investigators in the attic.  One investigator reported feeling the presence of something approaching another investigator.


Evidence Collected:  No phenomena was collected on still photography, but EVP were recorded in the attic and basement, and video phenomena was recorded.
